God in His sovereignty is involved in human affairs in ways not always obvious. That would explain not only things that happen but confirm what the Bible says about your value to God. So, you might want to pay closer attention to things that happen.

The Hebrew Scriptures tell a story about God tweaking events so slightly as to almost be unnoticed. An enemy of the people laid siege to their city. The famine was so severe, people were starving. During this suffering, the prophet Elisha told the king an abundance of food would appear the next day. In sarcastic disbelief a royal official said, “If the Lord should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?”

That evening, lepers living outside the gate made a desperate decision to seek food from the enemy. They found the camp full of supplies and equipment, but empty of soldiers. By the next day, news reached the city. The people rushed out to plunder the enemy camp and find food.

So how did God tweak the outcome? He caused the enemy soldiers to hear a sound. A rumor swept the camp that a mighty army approached. They fled into the darkness empty-handed, not because of an actual army, angelic beings, or a mighty miracle, but because of a sound (2 Ki. 7). No “windows in heaven” poured out miracle flour and barley for the people, but God turned events in a more subtle way.

If you only look for mighty miracles, you can miss God’s intervention in simpler, almost unnoticed ways. So, pay attention when you encounter these: uncanny coincidence, changed plans, changed mind, unexpected outcome, inadvertent omission, chance encounter, missed turn, surprising discovery, unforeseen delay, and (per the story) an unexplained sound. It is in these that you may well experience the care and providence of God, orchestrating the circumstances of your life. “You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down and are intimately acquainted with all my ways” (Psa. 139:2-3).

The Creator who scrutinizes your path values your life. Jesus said, “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows” (Matt. 10:29-31).

Carry with you an awareness of the presence of God, who loves you. Let that fill you with a patient hope, a resilient trust, and a thankful joie de vivre! If you are to live without fear, apply wisdom to your circumstances, and maintain strength to carry on, it is because the Lord is near. It’s as though there are windows in heaven, open just for you.
